Hamad’s 4th Birthday, Elevation Burgers and Announcing a Winner!

Posted in Cooking, Food, Parenting, Personal

No recipe today?!
Unfortunately that is correct!

But you know what’s special about this post today? It’s my first semi-review post.

I never imagined myself writing reviews on restaurants, products etc but there’s a first for everything and of course only when it’s something exceptional.

Dubai as I’m sure you know, is a very competitive market. You must have that special thing about you or your business pick up pace real fast. Oh and believe me word of mouth and social media are the fastest ways to market your business.

You’ll read more about that below!

That aside, Hamad celebrated his 4th birthday last week on the 10th of March but we threw him a party yesterday.

Not any party, a construction themed party. I didn’t want a big party like last year so I did most of the planning.

Lemongrass Sendoff Cake with Lemongrass Ginger Drizzle

Posted in Cooking, Food, Personal

Today started with one of the hardest moments I ever had in my life.
I actually was dreading to face this day for the passed two weeks!

My husband was sent off to one the countries where the UAE is part of the Peace Program there.

I used to feel for families with someone defending countries not their own but never did I realize how hard it is until this morning.

Mother, Some Dreams and Chicken Cacciatore

Posted in Cooking, Personal

I’ve been blogging since 1999 (on and off) but in a different manner.
It was all about art, photography and poetry. (My photography was awesome back then! Too bad my food photography sucks! Not for long though!)

Such a long time when I look back… and I have grown so much…
My way of writing was different then… I didn’t show my identity… only a few people knew who Surrealist was… and I used to speak my mind… loud and clear!

View my flickr page back then.

Bobotie, Yellow Rice and Being in a Rut!

Posted in Cooking, Personal

A turmoil … a pregnant brain … ready to breathe in and out… in labor for so long… but when it’s time to give birth… the thoughts prefer to stay in… and the words come out muted… why oh why?!

I feel I’m stuck in a rut by choice… I don’t push myself to do something… actually I don’t push myself to do the things that I should be doing…

My last post was in Ramadan and now it is way passed Ramadan, Eid and everyone’s schedules are nearly back to normal…

Only my schedule don’t seem consistent… nor do I stick to a semi-routine that will help me feel a little more organized!

For all this time that I haven’t posted a new entry, I don’t have a worthy excuse to even mention.

Not that I don’t like posting entries, on the contrary… I LOVE doing so… I just juggle too many things at once that by the end of the day I am so beat and I want to just sleep!
I have so many recipes lined up which need to be posted… I need to get myself out of this rut and into a proper routine!

I would also like to welcome my friends who have accepted to become contributors on my blog.
Check their links on the sidebar and the recipe page every now and then for contributions!
Welcome FatmaL, Figs&Saffron, and Washy! <3

Ramadan and Potato Curry

Posted in Cooking, Personal

Ramadan Mubarak! I know I’m thirteen days late but the past two weeks have been crazy!

Only last week did my youngest son Marwan recover from a very bad virus he had for over a week.
And only mid last week did I get a chance to breathe a little!

I promise I’ll post more often!

The smell of frankincense filling the house… our Ramadan ritual of frankincense infused water is being prepared…
A lingering aroma of my mother’s delicious rice pudding…
The kitchen is always swarming with everyone cooking, helping or suggesting!

It’s a full house during Ramadan and everyone is always in a hurry to get things done.
The feeling of a full kitchen is overwhelming in a good and bad way. It’s fun to see everyone cooking and baking but it’s also annoying because you can’t take your time doing what you like and it’s also quite loud!

Ramadan is the best month of the year! It strengthens your spiritual practices, Families gather for Futoor (time when the fast is broken), it teaches you compassion towards the less fortunate and also to visit relatives.

Last Ramadan I was pregnant with Marwan, Hamad used to play around with my nephews and I had all the time to cook and help in the kitchen.
This Ramadan… Hamad is still playing with the boys and nearly all the time they’re up to no good… Marwan is a handful and I don’t like to cook in a hurry.

Last week I made coconut potato curry with cashews which turned out good but they needed a little more salt.
Next time I make it, I probably won’t use the coconut milk and maybe use cream instead. Not that the coconut milk didn’t taste well but because I want a different flavor. Maybe some tanginess.

Coconut Potato Curry with Cashews
Recipe adapted from Joanne Eats Well With Others

Ingredients:
500 g new potatoes, steamed for 10 minutes (I boiled them)
1/3 cup cashews, soaked for 10-15 minutes and then chopped
1 cup green peas, fresh or frozen
2 cups cherry tomatoes (I used grape tomatoes)
2 tbsp tomato paste
1/2 tsp cumin seeds
1/2 tsp cayenne pepper
1/2 tsp coriander (I didn’t have any so I passed)
1/2 tsp garam masala
1 can light coconut milk (I used regular)
1 tbsp olive oil
Handful of basil, chopped (Didn’t have any so I used Parsley)
Salt and pepper
Lemon pepper (optional)

Method
In a large pan, heat the oil then add the cumin seeds.
When they begin to sizzle, add the cashews and allow to roast lightly.
Add the steamed potatoes and toss to coat with cashew cumin mixture.

Add 1/2 cup water to the tomato paste and mix until incorporated.
Add in the tomatoes and simmer.

Add all the spices and stir well to coat the potatoes.
Once the tomatoes are cooked through mash them and simmer for a few minutes.

Add the coconut milk and peas.
Simmer until the sauce begins to thicken.
Add salt, pepper and lemon pepper to taste.
Add chopped basil.

Raspberry Tapioca (Sago) and Patience!

Posted in Cooking, Parenting, Personal

He that can have patience can have what he will
Benjamin Franklin

I’m not a patient person everyone who knows me certainly does know that. My lack of patience also adds to me being short-tempered which is the worst thing especially when you’re married and have children!

It’s not an easy thing to do in a very fast paced world and especially now with everything being “instant”! I try to be patient but it doesn’t always work and I try to control my temper but it usually succeeds and I lose! Such a battle I have with my self-discipline!

Summer fruits are awesome and berries are the yummiest but raspberries are my utmost favorite!

Amidst my daily crazy/hectic/calm-for-a-minute day, and mother going to the fruit and vegetables market the day before bringing back raspberries among other yummy seasonal fruits, I had to make something with the raspberries but didn’t want to do the usual. Nothing came to mind… at least for that moment!

As a kid, I used to love going with my mother to the fruit and vegetables market and back then it was two streets away from our house! The smells of freshness, different languages traveling through my ears, people bargaining on prices…utter nostalgia!

That moment ended and there popped an idea in my head!
A new recipe… the thought made me feel proud! Just the thought that I felt daring enough to come up with a recipe from scratch and didn’t even know how it will turn out!

The Final Outcome!

From Surrealist to La Mère Culinaire

Posted in Parenting, Personal

“There is nothing wrong with change, if it is in the right direction”
Winston Churchill

The last time I blogged was back in 2005! That was quite a long time back.

Back then my blog was about my artwork, creative non-fiction writing and poetry.

Here I am, six years later with a totally new life!

Surrealist is still in me but has been reined for a little while and is waiting to be unleashed sometime soon in the body of the partially-new-me La Mère Culinaire!

Since 2005 I had a few blank years, then in 2008 got married to an extremely awesome man, 2009 gave me my first baby boy and 2010 gave my second boy and 2011 gave me the courage to write and start blogging again! A lot to absorb when you’ve never imagined your life to take this turn so fast! Yes yes… it is fast for me the Surrealist but not for me the Mère Culinaire!

Here I am now, a wife, a mother of two boys. Still loving art but now applying it differently. Now, it’s all about applying the art of parenting and the culinary arts in my daily life. Two things which have become very important aspects of my life.

You’ll soon see me blogging about recipes, parenting, interesting gadgets, and of course Art and Design.

In the meantime, enjoy a flashback of the metamorphosis …
